First broadcast October 12, 2009 Host Michael Rush talks with multimedia artist and filmmaker Michelle Handelman. From her 1995 documentary Blood Sisters, on the San Francisco lesbian leather scene, to her recent fantasmagoric multiscreen epic Dorian, Handelman has been digging into the underground in videos and performances for more than a decade. A self-proclaimed feminist who often uses her own body in her pieces, Handelman says her art is designed so there are no easy answers. Her work is at once fun, tragic, beautiful, chaotic, transgressive, glamorous, and not for the faint of heart (33 minutes). |
