listen | listen with RealPlayer First broadcast February 5, 2010 Phong Bui speaks with Jakob Fenger and Bjorn-Stjerne Christiansen of the three-person Danish artist collective Superflex while the missing member, Rasmus Nielsen, puts the finishing touches on their 2010 exhibition Flooded McDonalds at Peter Blum Gallery in New York. They discuss the shared interests that led to the foundation of Superflux in 1993, among them an interest in alternative social systems--"alternative" nonetheless being a term with which they are quite uneasy, an unease stemming from their experience with the uncomfortable political terminologies they have encountered in socialist Denmark--and the potential functions of works of art beyond the context of the art world. The socialist element of their work is key here, and much of the hour is spent exploring what this means, carefully divorcing themselves from the term while finding alliances between their beliefs and the ideology. Further explored is the difference between working as a solo artist and as a collaborative, and how to exist at a reasonable pace in an urgent society (57 minutes).
